Issue #5 October 2000

A New Season begins!

Nice to write for you once again!    This issue is the 1st of the season.  As you already know, the Chlnews is the paper for the league.  Everybody are welcome to write to us to publish an articles.  We publish about 1 issue each month.

For this month the beging season prediction and the news about summer are the mainframe.  At the very beginning, you could find our official prediction made by a complex stats calculus.  Next, Siman, our Commish, said his word with a little GM ranking.  After that, one of our reporter, Eugen Kogan, made an article about his view for the season for each division.  Finnaly, Sean Sackrider wrote about some summer transaction.

We hope you'll like this issue.

The Commish Word

The CHL 5th season is now off to a hopefully great start after a long and boring off-season. There were not too many big names to sign with on the free agent market this summer. But i hope every team has the roster they wanted to the run for the cup.
There have never been so many good team than this year. I`d like to see the CHL being a balanced league where almost every team has the chance to win making it more
interesting and competitive.

Good luck for everyone !

Prediction for the 5th season of the CHL

As the fifth season of the CHL is underway, I will take a look at the two conferences, and make my predictions for team records....

The East:

New Jersey remains the rock of the Eastern conference, which is clearly the dominant conference in the league, though it is yet to see a Stanley Cup in the four seasons of the CHL.  The Devils have experienced some financial problems, but they are still the model franchise of the league, and figure to be the cup favorite.  Montreal isone of two or three teams striving to push New Jersey out of the top spot, and they will be the second place team.  Boston is another power of the conference, while the Islanders, still missing a star goalie, remain a step behind the aforementioned three.  The all-Russian Capitals have the chemistry which makes them better than the sum of their parts, while the Ottawa Senators lose a good ten wins from the loss of Teemu Selanne, though remain a playoff team.  Buffalo and Atlanta hang in there for the playoffs in this very competitive conference.  The Flyers need some work to do if they want to creep into the playoffs, while the Rangers and Penguins are a step behind them.  The Hurricanes, Panthers, Lightning, and Maple Leafs are in serious lack of talent, and figure not to make the playoffs.

The West:

Defending champion Anaheim is the best of the West with firepower coming from everywhere.  Still a strong team behind Anaheim, the Oilers are one year removed from a Stanley Cup, and are still among the elite teams in the league.  The Stars are former champions and have a kind of coolness to their team, that attributes to their success.
That and Chris Pronger.  The Kings, Flames, Red Wings, and Predators could find themselves in a long and tediousdog fight for the last four spots of the Western conference playoff seeds, but the Kings are probably a step above the other three.  Colorado, San Jose, and Vancouver are not far behind, but are all missing something that is needed for them to challenge one of the other teams for the playoffs. Chicago and Phoenix are in the rebuilding phase. Here are my final predictions for records and playoff seeding for all the teams in the league.  Please note that they more or less represent individual assessments, not a league assessment.  Since there is either one winner and one loser for every game, or in the event of a tie, no winners and no losers, then the overall number of wins and losses should be equal to one another in a real league assessment.  But this chart doesn't take that into consideration.  Just record predictions...

Transaction review!

With the new season finally getting of to a start we had some pretty wacky trades and transactions that happend this off season. Most of the wacky things had to do with the teams over the cap that decided to not try and trade but just lose there highest paid players. When a team like Ottawa lost Teemu Selanne it could be a very devistating lose to them, but in the case of Mike Modano being cut by New Jersey Devils it seems with the depth and team that they have it won't really affect them as much as ottawa. Also losing key players was Carolina losing Petr Bondra and FLordia losing Marian Hossa. The only winner out of those off season cuts seems to be The Phoenix Coyotes who were able to sign Teemu Selanne and Petr Bondra.

There were many blockbuster deals that happend this offseason including deals that saw superstars as patrick roy actually being traded 2 times,Peter Forsberg being traded along with superstars Steve Yzerman,Rob Blake,NiklasLidstrom,Olaf Kolzig.

The big deals this offseason were Los Angeles traded Grahame, Afanasenkov, Laraque, Sutton, Holland, McKenna, Kohn, Gelinas and Finley to Toronto for Roy, Bordeleau, Murray, Delisle and 3,560,000

Anytime Patrick Roy is invloved in a deal that automatically becomes a big deal. Also included toronto recieved up and coming goalie prospest John Grahame which is the only reason why this deal happened. The Kings wow what can I say received a great deal getting Rem Murray Sebastien Bordeleau Patrick Roy and money to help pay for roy's contract and all they gave up is Grahame and Afanasenkov with the other players in this deal cheap players signed to long term contracts.

Toronto          traded Thibault, Niininaa, Delisle, Boileau, Gavey and 200,000 to
Ottawa              for Roy, Butsayev, Oliwa and 1st round draft pick

In this deal Roy was basically traded for Thibault just like in the real NHL. Give the edge in this deal to Ottawa as they also came out with Janne Niininmaa and some cash.

Detroit          traded Hebert, Boston 1st round and Montreal 2nd round draft picks to
Boston           for Thibault

This deal is also a WOW. If just judged on this deal you would think Thibault was a top 3 goalie in this league in what Boston was able to get for him.
Big advantage to Boston

New Jersey       traded Graves, Van Impe and Conroy to
San Jose            for Robitaille, Karpovtsev and Yelle

This deal was pretty even with 2 old LWers with great goal scoring abiltity for each other.

Detroit          traded Hecht and Montreal 2nd round draft pick to
Washington          for Bonk, Tampa Bay 1st round draft pick and 500,000

In this deal you have the Underachiever Radek Bonk being traded for the up and cmoing superstar to be Jochan Hecht. Both maybe come out to be just a 1 season fluke. As Bonk looks good after his last season could be proving he is not a horrible bust after all and Jochan Hecht would like to show that he was more than a rookie sensation. Look for this young star to not fall into the Sophmore Jinx class liek so many before him.
Edge Washington

Washington       traded Zubov and Zhamnov to
NY Rangers          for Bonk, Morozov, 1st and 2nd round draft picks

This is the deal that set up the Detroit/WAshington deal. give the big advantage to the NY Rangers in accuiring both Sergei Zubov and Alexei Zhamnov. Zhamnov looks like he is finally getting his scoring back up, and Zubov always seems to be a top defender. Washington took on 2 players who look like they may be 2 hug bust.
EDGE:NY RANGERS

New Jersey       traded Lehtinen, Slegr, Hatcher and 2nd round draft pick to
NY Rangers          for Zubov, Zhamnov and Mironov

this deal set up the other one with Washington and New York. New Jersey was
able to get a really good deal here in getting Sergei Zubov Alexei Zhamnov
and mironov. They did however trade one of the top offensive/defensive
players in the game in Jere Lehtinen.
Edge:EVEN

Atlanta          traded York, Phillips, Bouillon, Walker and 46th overall draft pick to
Pittsburgh          for Lidstrom, Johnson, Ference, Jovanovski and 1st round draft pick

All I can say is Pittsburgh what were you thinking?Although that can be said for a lot of the Maple Leafs trades as well.
EDGE: ATLANTA

Atlanta          traded Tanguay and Varada to
Edmonton            for Kvasha, Salo and 110,000

Another deal involvong young talent. There is no real edge at this moment due to the inexperience of all 4 players. If these players play liek they did this last season give the huge advantage to Edmonton.
Edge:unknown

Montreal         traded Morozov and Zelepukin to
NY Rangers          for Drury and Nabokov

Canadiens sure made a steal here. Getting the awesome young center Chris Drury. Sure they get Dimitri Nakobov who looks like he will be a huge bust, but all they gave up is old man Valeri Zelepukin and possible good RW Alexei Morozov if he ever gets his act together
EDGE:MONTREAL

Boston           traded Forsberg to
Nashville           for Yushkevich and Korolev

This looks liek a steal for the Predators who were able to get Forsberg due to his huge salary at a low price. Anytime you can get a player with Forsbergs abilities you always get the advantage unless you deal your whole team which the PRedators did not
EDGE:PREDATORS

This offseason saw many teams shake up there rosters a lot. The Maple Leafs have almost a whole new roster after coming in last place. Don't expect many changes from them although they do win least improved team this offseason.

The most improved team this season has got to be the Phoenix Coyotes. Anytime
you can get 2 superstars liek Petr Bondra and Teemu Selanne as free agent that will greatly improve your team.

The bets deal for both teams this off season looks to be

New Jersey  trading  Graves, Van Impe and Conroy to
San Jose            for Robitaille, Karpovtsev and Yelle

Thats all for my very first column in the NEW CHL newspaper. If you like the transaction report please let me know as well as if it sucks please tell me why so I can make everyone happy since this isn't my newspaper it is the
leagues.
